Early in April 24, three members of #Wirral #Photographers – Dave, Rob and Les – set off to #Anglesey, to the #Dingle reserve in Llangefni, to photograph #Red #Squirrels. En- route, for the first hour, the #weather was atrocious. From the A55 we saw the violent waves crashing into the shore, so, close to #Conway, we parked up to photograph the storm. The waves were quite spectacular, with the local authorities closing the road as the car parks etc were flooded.
Rob captured a very adventurous lady… Amazingly, though the wind and #waves continued through high tide, the rain stopped, and later we had a balmy afternoon on Anglesey, enhanced by the friendly squirrels.
Anglesey has been nurturing them for a few years now, and in the Dingle you are almost guaranteed to see them. Especially if Hugh Rowlands or Will (of “Will’s Café” fame – food for squirrels, not people!) are around. They feed the squirrels every few days and are both very friendly and fountains of knowledge about the reds.
Over a three hour stint, along the #boardwalk, we saw and photographed at least 5 individuals – it’s a bit hard at the time to know if it’s the same squirrel or not unless obviously different, there are two or three together, or by studying details back home on the computer. We frequently saw three. And one very dark one. So we definitely saw quite a few individuals, who came within a few feet of us, especially when Hugh proffered nuts. (Incidentally, you should never feed peanuts to squirrels; but pine cone nuts are veraciously eaten by the squirrels, not buried – so are a useful attraction).
The #woods also have many small #birds, which are evidently used to humans along the boardwalk and come close for food; so close for #photography.
The car park is literally on the entrance to the woods/boardwalk and only cost £1-20. Recommended.
