One of the pleasures delivered by our photographic hobby is that of witnessing the wonderful array of diverse subjects that we try to capture. A few days ago we were working on the streets in mono whilst observing the people of Liverpool, then there was the Rugby at Caldy and now we are watching magnificent horses soar over daunting hurdles, through water and across country - all at the International Eventing Horse Trials set against the beautiful backdrop of Kelsall Hill.

Rob Dave and I set of early to make sure we were there for the event start and we immediately impressed by the scale of the event, the wonderful surroundings and most of all the Free entry

The weather played its part and offered perfect illumination on the subjects as the negotiated what looked to us to be unsurmountable, obstacles. We were further pleased to see the bond between rider and horse as they traversed the 2mile meandering course. It was not always easy to know where we could photograph from but the event was marshalled well and we were often politely ‘repositioned’
Sadly there was a long slow moving queue in the Cafe, so they did not get the opportunity to challenge for one of the top spots in our Bacon Butty League, we opted instead for cold drinks and ice cream in one of the outside catering vans - a much better idea given the glorious weather.

There were so many different classes of event going on that it was difficult for us, as equestrian novices’ to get a full picture of how the day was developing. We therefore concentrated on capturing individual riders/horses attacked each fence - some with caution some with unbelievable abandon, we felt sometimes it was the rider in charge and other times it was the horse - either way it delivered to us a wonderful days sport and a cracking days photography.
